LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Traffic on Brownsboro Road from construction work is causing headaches for drivers.

Due to construction work, the roadway in east Jefferson County has left drivers feeling frustrated. The intersections at Lime Kiln Lane and Herr Lane have been filled with traffic in all directions.

Rachel Fagerberg lives near Herr Lane. She calls the traffic horrendous.

“It’s just a great place to raise your family but as far as the changes go, that we’ve seen in the area with the new construction, it’s very concerning,” Fagerberg said.

The mother of Ballard High School students is worried about children’s safety. There are four schools off Herr Lane: Wilder Elementary School, Kammerer Middle School, Ballard High School and St. Albert the Great School.

“The kids that walk to school they’re really having a tough go just accessing the sidewalks much less crossing Herr Lane as it is with all the added traffic in the area,” Fagerberg said.

A development called Providence Pointe calls for hundreds of high-end apartments along Herr Lane near Ballard High School. Next door, the new $930 million Veterans Affairs Medical site is under construction, impacting traffic on US 42.

“You need to build the infrastructure and then you build the facilities,” said Mike Borders, who lives near KY 22. “We’re pulling up putting in a hospital, a VA hospital, and we’re putting in apartments when the infrastructure hasn’t been built to support it.”

Also, in the works, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s improvement project at the intersection between KY 22 and Springcrest Drive.

“It’s a really it’s somewhat of a major thoroughfare. 71, everybody knows 71 is a disaster every day. It backs up on the 2-64 every single day. And so, 22 gets a lot of traffic because people use that as an alternative means to get out to Costco or all the hospitals out there,” Borders said.

Last week, cars going both directions were stuck, trying to use the same lane.

“I’m all about growth, I have no problem with that,” said Emily Griffin, who lives in Holiday Manor. “You just have to be a little bit creative about how to get around.”

Griffin’s typical three-minute drive to Kroger has turned into a 30-minute commute.

“The added traffic and the inconsistency with the lights can be a problem,” Griffin said.

Griffin doesn’t plan on moving though.

“It takes a while, you just need patience,” Griffin said.

The changes around Holiday Manor seemingly are happening all at once.

“The safety of getting in and out of the subdivision really concerns me because that’s, that’s the danger point. Turning left is where you’re going to get hurt,” Borders said.

“I’d like to think of it as short-term pain for long-term gain,” Griffin said.

Drivers can expect lane closures, traffic shifts, and delays for the coming months.

KYTC hopes to complete the construction on KY 22 next summer. KYTC did not comment on the project Wednesday.
