A lot of construction is underway in the Brandon area, and there’s a lot of speculation surrounding one big area.The area is owned and being developed by Ergon Properties and the word is, in a few weeks, an announcement will be made about what is coming in the first phase of construction. Earthmovers and construction crews have been working for months on the 70 acres beside the Home Depot in Brandon. “Everything is over on Lakeland Drive, so we need something over on this side of town,” said resident Samuel Henderson. “We need some restaurants. We need some hotels when people come for their concerts here,” said resident Nancy Swales.The close proximity to the Brandon Amphitheater and the ballfields has led to a flurry of development. Across the interstate, a Moe’s and Pizza Hut combo just opened.“We employ over 120 employees in both businesses,” said co-owner John McGowan.McGowan said it is the promise of what is coming to Brandon that helped convince them to open up now.“We saw a lot of development going on on the other side as well, so car lots, retail restaurants and shops, so we wanted to get on this side,” McGowan said. “We know a hotel is coming as well, so a lot of businesses are built in Brandon, Mississippi, and we wanted to be a part of that.”Ergon Properties, which owns the 70-acre lot across the interstate, is still guarded about naming the businesses that are coming, but developers did say it is likely weeks away and will include a Mexican restaurant, a hotel and a grocery store for starters.“Lord knows we need another grocer here in Brandon,” Mayor Butch Lee said.The mayor said he knows residents are anxious to find out what is coming. The East Metro Parkway opening is a week away, promising more traffic from the Lakeland Drive area, across Interstate 20, where a new development will soon be in place.“We will announce and tell those stories as those properties want to tell those stories,” Lee said. “We will stand beside them and say this is what we have been working on and we are very happy to have them in Brandon.”There has been rampant speculation that a Costco is coming. It is not a Costco. The East Metro Parkway is set to open by the end of October at the latest.
